Governor Hochul and other state agencies want to use our climate goals as an excuse to build new nuclear reactors.
After hosting a “Future Energy Economy Summit” in Syracuse last month (which was invite-only and hosted multiple conversations on new nuclear in New York), the state appears to be moving ahead with planning a future for toxic, polluting, and dangerous reactors.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority recently published a “blueprint” for the construction of new reactors. We have until November 8th to tell our state and agency leaders that nuclear is NOT a climate solution! Nuclear is a dirty distraction, and if our state spends massive amounts of time and money on pursuing Small Modular Reactors (a technology design that is not even commercially-viable or in operation anywhere in the world), we will miss our climate goals.
New Yorkers are struggling to pay their electricity bills today – we refuse to bankroll an expensive and polluting boondoggle that will only enrich the nuclear industry. Use our comment tool to send a letter to NYSERDA’s President and CEO, Doreen Harris, asking her to prioritize proven technologies like solar and wind power paired with battery storage, and to meet the goals of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
National Grid has filed a request with our energy regulators to raise your rates to pay for gas infrastructure that they will earn a profit on. The estimated monthly bill increases are $18.34 for a typical gas customer and $18.92 for a typical electric customer. Tell our regulators to reject these hikes!
